Know Your Cold & Flu Symptoms

Colds, flu, and pneumonia can have similar symptoms. Use the chart below to see if your symptoms require a visit to SHAC or if you can take care of yourself. Remember you can always call SHAC and talk to an Advice Nurse if you're not sure at 503-725-2800. If SHAC is closed call the main clinic at 503.725.2800 and follow the instructions for After Hours Care. If it is a life-threatening emergency, dial 911.

Sore throat
  • Scratchy throat
  • Can swallow liquids
  • Minor swelling of glands
  • Inability to swallow liquids
  • White/yellow spots in throat
  • Increased pain after three days
Fever
  • Less than 101oF/38.5oC
  • Higher than 101oF/38.5oC for two days (48 hours)
  • Shaking chills
Cough
  • Dry cough
  • Chest pain
  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Foul smelling, brown, or bloody phlegm
Runny nose and sneezing
  • Relatively clear or yellow drainage
  • Mild sinus or facial discomfort
  • Foul smelling, brown, or bloody mucus
  • Severe sinus or facial pain
Earache
  • Stuffy or clogged ear
  • Pain or discharge from ears
Body ache
  • General aches
  • Persistent abdominal pain
Fatigue
  • General tiredness
  • Excessive fatigue or cannot stand up
Headache
  • Mild pain or pain that improves with non-prescription pain reliever and oral hydration
 IF YOU HAVE A HEADACHE PLUS ANY OF THESE SYMPTOMS, SEEK MEDICAL CARE IMMEDIATELY
  • Blurred vision, or severe dizziness
  • Persistent severe vomiting
  • Severe stiffness in neck or back
  • Mental agitation or confusion
  • Severe headache with fever greater than 101oF/38.5oC and rash anywhere on the body
