This fall, the Office of Admissions is traveling the globe! Each year, the Office of Admissions sends international admissions counselors around the globe to help to recruit students and establish global partnerships. This year we are traveling to Bolivia, Brazil, China, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Kuwait, Malaysia, Oman, Panama, Quatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam. The Office of Admissions chooses its destinations based upon several things. In some cases, the region will send large numbers of students each year and we have constituents, partners, prospective students and alumni to visit and provide updates from Portland State. Some regions are more "up-and-coming" in that we have started to see applications or international trends and data dictate that these countries are likely to send more students to the United States and we are hoping to get some of those students to join Portland State's campus! Other regions are home to large pockets of ex-patriots--including a good number of Oregonians.
There are also a good number of international students already inside the United States. These students are completing secondary school at US high schools or are enrolled at community colleges. PSU is reaching out to visit these schools to help make it easier for these students to transition to the university. The ultimate goal is to grow and diversify our international population. There are more pockets of wonderful students out there to visit--but we don't always have the time, or money, to go visit them all. We use data on global application trends, application numbers, and economic indicators to determine where to go and when.
