Emily Minty and Heather Dittmore, Foreign Languages and Literatures faculty, presented "Tagesschau.de: Developing Cultural Competency" at the Fall Conference of the Confederation of Oregon Foreign Language Teachers, which was held jointly in Vancouver, Wash., with the Washington language teachers' organization, Oct. 11. "Tagesschau.de" promotes early, fluent reading in PSU's first-year German program by helping learners work with German-language current events Web sites.

Rudi Nussbaum, Physics and Environmental Sciences emeritus faculty, gave an invited presentation, "Mysterious Excess of Childhood Leukemia Around 16 German Nuclear Reactors?" at the 2008 conference Prescriptions for Survival, sponsored by Physicians for Global Survival, the Canadian affiliate of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Sept. 25-57. In his presentation, he described a government-sponsored study that was expected to disprove claims of increased incidence of leukemia in children under the age of five, who live in the vicinity of nuclear power plants. To the consternation of the researchers and their sponsors, the study found an undisputed increase of childhood malignancies out to distances of about 30 miles.

In the past ten years green building construction, a process which aims to decrease environmental impact of buildings through recycled materials and improved efficiency, has taken root. Mark Sytsma, Environmental Science and Management faculty, was appointed by the Governor's office to the West Coast Governors Agreement on Ocean Health Action Team on Spartina Management. Sytsma is co-chair of the action team, which is charged with developing and implementing a plan to eradicate spartina from the West Coast by 2018. Spartina is an economically and ecologically damaging invasive grass found in estuaries.

David Ervin, Environmental Sciences and Management, Economics, and the Center for Sustainable Processes and Practices faculty, has been appointed chair of the National Research Council Committee on the Impact of Biotechnology on Farm Economics and Sustainability. During the next year, the committee will produce a consensus report of the findings of its study and identify future applications of plant and animal biotechnology that are likely to affect agricultural producers decision-making in the future.

Richard Clucas, Political Science faculty, has been appointed executive director of the Western Political Science Association beginning September 2009. Founded in 1948, the WPSA is one of the nation's leading political science associations with more than 1000 members. Its purpose is to promote the study and teaching of government and politics, to foster research, and to facilitate the discussion of public affairs. The executive director is the chief administrative officer for the association.

Leslie Hammer, Psychology faculty, was awarded a five-year, $4.1 million grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. The grant will fund the Center for Work-Family Stress, Safety, and Health. It is part of a $28 million initiative funded by the National Institute of Health and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention to support research on workplace policies that reduce work-family conflict and improve the health of workers and their families.

Rik Lemoncello, Speech and Hearing Sciences faculty, was awarded a Small Business Innovation Research Phase II grant with colleagues at Life Technologies, LLC, in Eugene, to research and develop a television-assisted prompting program to assist brain injury survivors with completing daily tasks. This research will involve collaboration with the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Center in Portland.

Brad Tuttle and Jesse Dillard who received the Accounting Horizons Best Paper Award for their article, "Beyond Competition: Institutional Isomorphism in U.S. Accounting Research." This AAA award, which is sponsored by McGraw Hill, was presented to Professor Tuttle and Professor Dillard in the form of a plaque and a $2,500 prize for each recipient on Wednesday, August 6th at the AAA 2008 Annual Meeting held in Anaheim, California.
