Dave Ervin, Environmental Sciences faculty, was a visiting scholar in the Department of Land Economy at Cambridge University May through June 2008. During his stay, he interviewed European scholars on the economics of business sustainability and university-industry research relationships for two book projects. He also presented seminars at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris on voluntary business environmental management and at University of Lancaster on university-industry relationships in biotechnology.

David Sailor and Graig Spolek, Mechanical and Materials Engineering faculty, received a $149,500 grant from the U.S. Green Building Council and a matching grant of $75,000 from Oregon BEST for research leading to the development of a green roof energy savings calculator. The research also involves collaboration with colleagues at University of Toronto and the trade organization Green Roofs for Healthy Cities.

Elise Granek, Environmental Sciences faculty, co-authored and presented the talk "Mangrove-Exported Nutrient Incorporation by Sessile Invertebrates on Adjacent Coral Reefs" at the International Coral Reefs Symposium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in July. Granek also co-authored and presented the poster "The Protective Capacity of Mangroves during Tropical Storms: A Case Study from Wilma and Gamma in Belize."

Gil Latz, International Affairs vice provost, will represent PSU on a United States advisory working group charged with formulating a set of recommendations on how to strengthen higher education cooperation between the United States and Vietnam. In June, the United States and Vietnam signed a memorandum of understanding to establish an education task force. The advisory will submit its recommendations to each government by January 2009.

Patricia Backlar, Philosophy faculty, was a panel member in the Pandemic Summit: Beyond the Basics at the Portland World Trade Center, Sept. 16. Backlar's panel analyzed the ethical challenges that confront private business, with the goal of maintaining public trust and minimizing social disruption and economic loss during an influenza pandemic.

Patricia Wetzel, Foreign Languages and Literatures faculty, and Masami Nishishiba, Public Administration faculty, received a three-year, $500,000 from the U.S. Department of Education International Research and Studies grant for a project to develop online training in interpretation and translation. The grant will be used to create e-learning modules for Japanese interpretation and Arabic translation.

Steve Johnson, Urban Studies and Planning adjunct, co-presented the keynote speech "The Role of Arts and Civic Space in a Healthy Community" at the opening ceremony for the Arte Piazza Bibai in Bibai, Japan, July 3. Johnson also presented a paper on the role of civic engagement in creating sustainable communities at Ryukoku University in Kyoto, Japan, July 7. Johnson was selected to be part of an international research group sponsored by the university and Japan's Ministry of Education, studying partnership developments of local governance.
