PSU Graduate-Level Scholarship Opportunities
College of Urban & Public Affairs Scholarships
The College of Urban & Public Affairs is in the process of transitioning
to the University-wide online scholarship program. The new system allows students to submit one application for all of the general scholarship pools for
which they are eligible. In order to be included in specific
scholarship pools, students may need to submit an additional short essay
addressing the specific criteria for that particular scholarship.
The deadline for most of the graduate scholarships for the College
of Urban & Public Affairs is April 21, 2008, and applications can be
submitted online at http://www.pdx.edu/finaid/scholarships. If you have already begun your application, but
not yet submitted it online, please note that you will need to answer an additional essay question in order to complete it.
If you have already submitted your application and would like to be included in the

Helen Oliver Memorial Fellowship Award
An annual cash award given to a graduating student with an official degree who demonstrates the promise of being a responsible and mature civic leader. The award is not based on need or scholastic achievement (although good scholarship is assumed), but rather on good character and dedicated spirit. Students may apply through the Office of Academic Affairs, Cramer Hall, Room 349, 725-5251.
Underrepresented Minorities Achievement Scholarship Program -- Graduate-level
A limited number of UMAS awards are available to PSU graduate students who are Oregon residents and of African-American, American Indian/Alaska Native, or Hispanic American heritage. Awards are made in the amount of instructional fees. For information contact Educational Equity Programs and Services, Smith Memorial Center, Room 120, 725-4457.
Oregon Retired Educator's Association -- Merit Award Scholarship
The Oregon Retired Educator's Association is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a graduate student in gerontology (certificate, master's, or doctoral students are all eligible). Applications must be received by Thursday, February 21, 2008, and should include the following components:
- Letter of introduction sharing:
- Learning experiences, changes, discoveries, priorities, and goals; AND
- Information using each of the following headings:
- Education
- Employment history
- Professional affiliation
- Activities and publications
- Scholarships
- Awards and honors
- Community service and volunteer activities
- Updated transcript
- Letter of recommendation from a college faculty member

CDC's Public Health Prevention Service (PHPS) Program
The Public Health Prevention Service (PHPS) program is a three-year,
on-the-job national service and training program offered by the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to master's-level health
professionals. Training and work assignments provide opportunities
for participants to apply their public health skills in program
management at the local, state, national, and international levels. Participants learn through on-the-job and formal training as well as work assignments at CDC headquarters and in state and local health agencies.
Each year, a new class of 25 prevention specialists is selected through a competitive process, with applications due on February 15, 2008. Interviews for these positions will be conducted in Atlanta, Georgia in April 2008, and the program will begin in early October 2008.
