Dr. Timothy Christy is Assistant Professor of Marketing and Advertising Management at Portland State University.
Dr. Christy earned his PhD in communications, with a secondary emphasis in marketing, from the University of
Tennessee. His MS in communications was also earned at the University of Tennessee, while his BS in psychology
was earned at the University of Pittsburgh. Though he has taught across several different disciplines including
Communications, Journalism, Marketing, and Advertising, Dr. Christy currently teaches courses in advertising
creative strategy, emarketing, and digital media planning. Additionally, he has instructed/co-advised the PSU
National Student Advertising Competition team since 2009, helping the team earn three regional trophies
including one First Place title. Dr. Christy also established the School of Business’s first ever student-run advertising
agency, FIR Advertising, which serves local businesses with their strategic communication needs. Prior to arriving
at PSU, Dr. Christy taught at the University of Oregon, University of St. Thomas (in Saint Paul, MN), and University
of Tennessee. He has won several teaching awards including two Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching awards
from the PSU School of Business.

Dr. Christy’s professional background includes advertising sales, market research and strategic communications
planning, and quality assurance. Through his professional pursuits he has gained extensive experience in strategic
analysis and reporting, team management, and sales presentations. Through his continued networking with the
Portland business community and his work with student groups, Christy has advised and/or consulted several local
small-to-medium companies on strategic communications planning and implementation.

Dr. Christy’s academic research thus far has centered on audiences' perceptions of promotional messages and
products, with particular emphasis on offensive advertising. Currently, he is working on research investigating
several aspects of social media including online social gaming and contextual influences on word-of-mouth
behaviors. Adopting both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, he has published research in the Journal
of Current Issues and Research in Advertising, Journal of Marketing Communications, Journal of East-West
Business, and Journal of Advertising Education. Dr. Christy has also presented his research at such conferences
as the American Academy of Advertising conference, the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass
Communication conference, and the National Conference on Tobacco or Health.
