Brian Bolton joined the School of Business at Portland State University in 2011. Prior to joining PSU, Brian was on the faculty at the University of New Hampshire. Prior to entering academia, Brian worked as a consultant in PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Acquisition Advisory Services group and as a research analyst with a private equity group in Dallas, Texas.
At PSU, Brian teaches Business Finance and Valuation in the undergraduate program, Macroeconomics and Microeconomics in the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program and Valuation and Analysis, Macroeconomics and Financial Institutions in the Master of Financial Analysis (MSFA) program.
Brian’s research focuses on corporate governance, financial institutions, executive compensation and sustainability. His corporate governance research looks at how to structure boards of directors and executive compensation programs to best align the interests of stockholders, managers and other stakeholders. His financial institutions research uses the financial crisis of 2008 as a natural case study to analyze the risks that institutions take, the role of government intervention and regulation, and executive compensation. His sustainability research considers how a firm’s investments in human, social and environment-based projects can add value. Brian’s research has been published in Journal of Financial & Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Law, Finance & Accounting, Columbia Law Review, Yale Journal on Regulation, and other finance and business journals.
In 2015, Brian published his first book, Sustainable Financial Investments, which shows how to value sustainability-related investments from economics, strategic and financial perspectives. He is currently working on another book, which will show how certain corporate governance and executive compensation programs can be structured at financial institutions to reduce the chance of another financial crisis occurring.
After being born in London and spending much of the first half of his life in Texas, Brian has been migrating west. Brian lives in downtown Portland and, in his spare time, enjoys the Oregon mountains, running, and happy hour.
