Students studying for a business degree at Portland State are considered pre-business students until they are formally admitted to the School of Business , generally at the end of their sophomore year or beginning of their junior year.
The freshman and sophomore years are spent fulfilling general education requirements and meeting course requirements for admission to the School of Business. New students are encouraged to attend a PSU orientation.
Orientations
PSU holds several orientation sessions for entering freshmen throughout the summer.
Course Recommendations for Freshmen
Freshmen who plan to study business at Portland State will need to follow three sets of requirements for the degree:
University Studies - A four-year general education sequence that begins with Freshman Inquiry and concludes with the Senior Capstone course. Freshmen business students must take Freshman Inquiry for three terms of the freshman year. See the University Studiespage for more information.
Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science Requirements - Twenty-eight credits of liberal studies classes generally organized around science and social science classes (Bachelor of Science) or foreign language, arts and letters and social science classes (Bachelor of Arts). Business majors may choose to complete either BS or BA requirements. Many of the courses required for admission to the School of Business will fulfill social science or arts and letters course requirements, and should be taken during the freshman or sophomore years. See the General University Requirements sheet (PDF) for more information.
Business Requirements:Â
Students should try to complete all pre-business work by the end of winter or spring term of their sophomore year, and apply to the School of Business by the April or July deadline to be officially admitted by summer or fall term of junior year.
