Visit to the Museum

“This week my group of American students in Saint Petersburg visited the Russian Museum, which is located on the grounds of the Mikhailovsky Palace near the center of the city. Our guide, a historian from Saint Petersburg State University, led us through many rooms full of Russian paintings dating back through Russian history almost 10 centuries. We proceeded in chronological order from ancient Russian icons and other Orthodox Christian paintings dating from the Middle Ages, through the imperial period with many portraits of the tsars, into the 19th century with Romantic wilderness scenes and personages evoked by the golden age of Russian literature. We also saw preserved, glistening, luxurious furniture dating from the imperial period (1721-1917).” Student, Todd Long
