PORTLAND -- Portland State University is getting into the beer industry, offering an online course on the business of craft brewing.
Some people remarked that it could be a page from 'Portlandia': A university certificate on how to succeed in the business of beer. But, it’s for real.
As craft brewers, distilleries and alcoholic cider facilities continue to expand in Oregon, it was just a matter of time before someone came up with a craft beer business course.
The 24-week online class will cover everything from starting a brewery to financing, and the legal aspects of the beer business and marketing.
Several area breweries helped create the curriculum, including Rogue, Hopworks, Widmer and Migration.
“It is for serious people who are truly interested in getting involved in the industry and want to start their own brewery or brew pub,” said Kristen Pedersen with the PSU School of Business. “But we anticipate there will be some interest from all those people who are brewing in their garages and have the dream.”
The course was designed for professional development but anyone enrolled in the School of Business at PSU can receive credit for parts of the course.
Also, at the end of the class, Rogue will offer a 40-hour internship for those interested. Registration starts Tuesday and can be accessed through the PSU web site.
