On May 28, 2013, Portland State University's Center for Public Service and the Willamette Valley Development Officers (WVDO) announced the Professional Certificate in Nonprofit Fundraising. The program accelerates the learning curve for individuals joining the nonprofit sector, compressing knowledge they would normally gather over several years on the job into a mix of classroom and practicum learning that is completed in less than one year.
“We modeled our approach after similar, successful programs in cities like San Francisco and Seattle” said Agnes Zach, Executive Director of WVDO. “Like any business sector, there are certain nuances and tools that are specific to working in nonprofit fundraising. People tend to pick these up over the first few years on the job, but this program shrinks that learning curve considerably. Nonprofit employers know that graduates of the Professional Certificate in Nonprofit Fundraising program are more prepared and are able to contribute at a higher level than someone with no nonprofit experience.”
Consisting of one, three-hour class per week, the program is designed to support professionals already in the workplace, as additional training for those currently in the nonprofit sector or for people hoping to change careers.
“We are very excited about this program,” said Phil Keisling, Director of the Center for Public Service at Portland State University. “We see a great commitment to the nonprofit community throughout the Portland-metro area and supporting that spirit is a key goal for the Center for Public Service. With this program, we believe that we can help people who want to work in the nonprofit sector find jobs by better equipping them with a strong set of skills. We also believe that this program strengthens our nonprofit community by providing top-quality candidates to serve.”
Registration for the program is open now and classes begin October 7, 2013. For additional details on the Professional Certificate in Nonprofit Fundraising, please visit the CPS website (http://www.pdx.edu/cps/professional-certificate-in-nonprofit-fundraising).
