The Hatfield School of Government and its Center for Public Service hosted The 2nd International Conference on Government Performance Management and Leadership, on October 1-2, 2011, in Portland, Oregon. More than 140 scholars, practitioners, and students attended the two-day event, which featured more than 70 submitted papers and presentations. Almost 50 participants came from abroad, representing 8 different countries. Our largest international delegation came from China - with 24 participants!

In addition to Portland State University, we would like to thank our other conference co-sponsors: China’s Lanzhou University (School of Management); Japan’s Waseda University (Okuma School of Public Management); Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics and Public Administration (HCMA); and Rutgers University School of Public Affairs and Administration. The Oregon Public Performance Measurement Association (OPPMA) held a small seminar and assisted as a panel sponsor. Thank you all. The conference would not have been possible without your support.

Under the theme  “Innovations Toward Sustainable Solutions”, the conference presentations covered broad range of topics including practical recommendations and cutting edge research.  Presenters reported on how administrative leadership, community and inter-organizational collaboration and sustainability contribute to successful government performance.  The presentations and discussion compared the Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, U.S. and European experiences with government performance management.

The first international conference on Performance Management and Leadership was held in Lanzhou China, in September 2009. At this year’s event, Professor Mari Kobayashi announced that Waseda University would plan to host the 3rd conference, tentatively scheduled for the fall of 2013.

More information about the PSU-hosted conference, including submitted abstracts, papers, and presentations can be found at http://www.lanzhou-hatfield.pdx.edu/. Please address any requests for papers and any specific questions on the conference panels to Dr. Kent Robinson at laha@pdx.edu .

Thanks again to all the participants, staff and volunteers who made this conference such a success.  We can’t wait for 2013!
