Professor Lisa M. Zurk, Ph.D., Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

Dr. Lisa M. Zurk joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at PSU's Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science in January 2005, bringing a wealth of research experience and a history of collaboration with other universities and researchers. Before coming to PSU, she spent nine years at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, conducting research in understanding the physics of electromagnetic and acoustics wave propagation through modeling and measurement in order to devise advanced, physics-based signal processing techniques. While at MIT, Dr. Zurk took a one-year sabbatical to teach and conduct research as a visiting Fulbright Professor in the University of Helsinski Math Department. Prior to MIT, she spent four years in industry in the area of biomedical instrumentation.

Dr. Zurk received her bachelor's degree in computer science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1985, her master's in electrical and computer engineering at Northeastern University in 1991, and her Ph.D. in electrical engineering at the University of Washington in 1995.

Since arriving at PSU, Dr. Zurk has secured over $1.3 million in research funding over the next three years, spearheading a record number of collaborations with such institutions as MIT Lincoln Laboratory, the Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington, Oregon Health & Science University's OGI School of Science & Engineering, Oregon State University, and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. She founded the Northwest Electromagnetic and Acoustics Research Laboratory (NEAR-Lab) in the Maseeh College, which involves eight graduate and undergraduate students and several ECE faculty members.

Dr. Zurk was recently awarded the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Entry-Level Faculty award for a proposal entitled Mid-Frequency Bottom Scattering Model Development and Validation. This Special Research Award in Ocean Acoustics provides funding for three years at the level of $100,000 per year, beginning January 2006.

Dr. Zurk's research interests are primarily in the area of sensing phenomenon and have such relevant applications as remote sensing of the earth's surface, detection of explosives or bio-agents, and acoustic detection of underwater sources (e.g., salmon populations). She is the author of over 50 technical publications and serves on numerous professional committees.
