Nancy Hathaway presents floor and wall-mounted mixed media sculptures this July in the Littman Gallery.  Hathaway explores the duality of human experience in her art practices, and her sculptural work investigates the opposition between intellect and instinct, as well as humor, in the female condition.

Hathaway best describes her work in her artist statement:  "[p]atriarchy and the social construction of gender roles, nature versus nurture, and the division of labor between the sexes and its role in the acquisition of time are all issues that I explore.  Over time I have developed an ever-evolving personal visual language.  The resulting symbols I employ, as well as the objects I create, are hatched spontaneously from my subconscious.  Often it is intuition that dominates this process, and the resulting works are organic and highly tactile in nature...at other times, the visual language I employ is coupled with political, scientific or historical references, and my work becomes to a greater degree intellectually based."

Hathaway received her MFA from the University of Idaho and is currently an Assistant Professor of Art at Eastern Washington University.
