Mike Burton, Extended Studies vice provost, gave the keynote speech at the Institute of Policy Alternatives for Montreal sponsored by Quebec University at Montreal and the city of Montreal on Dec 4. Burton's speech outlined the efforts of the city of Portland and Portland State in building a sustainable community and offered a vision for future sustainable development. He also spoke briefly at the Canadian Center for Architecture at the invitation of its founder, Phyllis Lambert, about the green building efforts in Portland. He was taken on a tour of the first "urban farming" greenhouse in North America built on top of an industrial building in the heart of Montreal. The developers of the facility are interested in building a similar one in Portland.
