New Year's resolutions to get in shape could conveniently coincide
with the opening of the new Academic and Student Recreation Center
set for Jan. 3. Faculty and
staff may take advantage of the swimming pool; three-court gymnasium; 1/11 mile,
three-lane running track; and cardiovascular and weight-training rooms. Membership
is $30 a month and $35 for
spouses and domestic partners. A grand opening ceremony for the center is
planned for Feb. 22.
The 208,000 square foot, 6-story building will also house
the School of Social Work, the Oregon University System Chancellor's Office,
and city of Portland archives, as well as ground-level retail shops. A bicycle
hub on the first floor will include trained mechanics as well as tools for bicyclists
to work on their own bikes.
The building is expected to qualify for LEED
Gold status because of its energy efficiency design that reduces energy usage by 29
percent, use of reclaimed water to decrease water use by 89 percent, and the
diversion of 95 percent of the demolition and construction waste from
landfills.
