Standard First Aid

This course teaches the skills of First Aid and Accident Prevention. Learn how to recognize and respond to injury or sudden illness, control bleeding, care for muscle, bone, and joint injuries as well as treatment for burns.

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider

This course is designed for the rescuer who has a duty to respond. Includes recognizing and caring for breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, infants and children: two-rescuer CPR; use of resuscitation mask, bag valve mask and Automated External Defibrillator.

Group Fitness Instructor Training

This class will give you the strategies needed to teach safe and effective group exercise classes. The class is designed to prepare you to take the AFAA Group Fitness Certification Exam and teach Group X classes for Campus Rec. Cost includes: textbook, practice exam, and instruction. Certification exam fee extra. Class limited to first 10 participants. Register at Member Services.

Lifeguard Course

 

The primary purpose of the Red Cross Lifeguarding program is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to emergencies and to provide care for injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel arrive and take over.

 

The prerequisites for this course are as follows : 

 

  • Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing.  Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed.  Goggles may be used.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds which includes staring in the water, swimming 20 yards (face can be in or out of the water but no goggles allowed), completing a surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to 7 ft and retrieve a 10 lb. brick. Then candidate returns to surface and swims 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the brick and keeping the face at or near the surface, able to breathe.  Lastly, candidate must exit the water without using the ladder or steps.

The course fee includes access to the Lifeguard Training book (printable), resuscitation mask and certification fees.

Lifeguard Instructor Course

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Course is to train participants to teach the American Red Cross Lifeguarding, Lifeguarding Blended Learning, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, Waterpark Skills, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers, Administering Emergency Oxygen, and Bloodborne Pathogens Training courses and/or modules. 


This course is taught according to the American Red Cross standards and participants will receive American Red Cross certification cards. Lifeguard Instructor certifications are valid for 2 years.

The prerequisites for this course are as follows:

  • Be 18 years of age by the last day of class
  • Present a current American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED
  • Successfully complete the Online Session
  • Successfully complete the Precourse Session
  • Attend and actively participate in all course sessions
  • Successfully complete class activities, including all practice-teaching assignments
  • Role-model demonstrate knowledge of CPR for the Professional Rescuer r.11, First Aid r.11, and Lifeguard Training r.12 skills, including all rescues, escapes, removal from the water, and spinal injury management.
  • Successfully complete of all Lifeguard Training r.12 course prerequisites
  • Pass all exams with a minimum of 80%

Certified Pool and Spa Operator 

NOTE : To enroll in this course, you must be at least 18 years old

 

This course is designed to teach participants how to manage and operate public swimming pools and spas. This is a national certification from the National Swimming Pool Foundation. Please note that the course is math intensive. At no point will participants be getting in the water. Participants should bring:  pen/pencil, paper, highlighter, scratch paper, a calculator and lunch/lunch money.
