As winner of Campus Compact's top faculty award in 2011, Sherril Gelmon conducted a session titled "The Joy of Engagement: Motivating Faculty to Work with Communities" at the Association of American Colleges and Universities annual meeting Jan. 27 in Washington, D.C. Gelmon won Campus Compact's Thomas Ehrlich Civically Engaged Faculty Award for her exemplary scholarship and leadership in advancing service-learning and civic engagement. She is a professor of public health and chair of the Division of Public Administration at Portland State.
At the meeting, Gelmon highlighted strategies for motivating faculty to become engaged with their communities. The session was presented in a conversation format with Devorah Lieberman, former PSU faculty member and now president of University of La Verne, and Julie Plaut, executive director of the Minnesota Campus Compact.
