All psychology majors are strongly encouraged to participate in the advising process. Advising is provided by full-time faculty, graduate student advisors, and undergraduate peer mentors. By the junior year, majors should attend:
One Group Advising session
At least one faculty advising session
Advising is as an ongoing process that assists majors in defining their career goals and planning their program of study. To benefit most from the advising program, majors should make use of the full range of advising services and select a faculty advisor who most closely matches the student's interests or career goals.
The Psychology Department advising process includes four components:
Group Advising
This is the first step in the psychology advising process. You can sign up for a group session on the sign up sheets posted in the Psychology Department lobby, or if you cannot attend any of the scheduled times, you may write the advisors at psyadvis@pdx.edu to set up a special appointment. Bring a copy of your Psychology DARS to the session ( click here for instructions ). These sessions are conducted in groups and are designed to answer questions about the main psychology requirements and the advising program in general. In addition, students are guided in the selection of an individual faculty advisor. Students are provided with an explanation of their advising transcript which summarizes credits earned as well as credits needed. However, since these are group sessions the advisors might not be able to spend too much time answering individual questions and concerns. For these questions students will be advised whether a faculty advisor or a peer advisor would be most appropriate.
Faculty Advising
This part of the advising program offers the opportunity for a full-time faculty member to provide assistance in the selection of advanced course work, practicum, and community experiences that contribute to the student's academic and/or career goals. Prior to approaching a faculty member for advising, students should attend a group session. All psychology majors are expected to take the proactive steps required to find a faculty advisor following the steps that were outlined in the group session. Students are encouraged to meet with their faculty advisor at least once per year. To review your DARS or requirements, please visit the peer advisors or attend a group session.
Peer Advising
Peer advisors are selected based on their advanced experience as psychology majors. These advisors offer personalized review of the student's DARS, as well as guidance in course planning and referrals to campus resources. Peer advising is available on a drop-in basis in the Peer Advising/Psi-Chi Office located in CH 360. Prior to attending drop-in sessions with peer advisors, students must attend an group advising session in the Psychology Department. Hours are posted on the peer advising door (Cramer Hall 360) and in the Psychology Department. If you need to arrange for a special time please write: psypeers@pdx.edu. Students should bring a copy of their DARS to the session.
Career Workshops
The advising program includes presentations each term that provide overviews of sub-disciplines and applied areas of psychology. Scheduled as one-hour sessions throughout the term, these presentations offer students the opportunity to interact with PSU Psychology faculty and psychologists working in a range of fields. The sessions also assist students in exploring career options for graduates with a Bachelor's degree in psychology. Dates and times are posted in the Psychology Department and through the departmental mailing list.
Mailing list
The Psychology Department administers a listserv for majors and other interested students. All students with an interest in psychology are encouraged to sign up for the listserv in order to stay informed about upcoming events and opportunities (career workshops, for example). To subscribe, submit your request to email majordomo@lists.pdx.edu . In your message type: subscribe psychweb. If you have trouble signing up, please write kindermannt@pdx.edu directly.
