(Portland, OR) May 13, 2011 — Mike Soto has announced his intention to retire his position as Chief of the Campus Public Safety Office (CPSO) on May 15, 2011. He will continue working with the Vice President through the end of June to assist with the transition. Soto leaves after 31 years as an officer, lieutenant and chief of CPSO.
"Chief Soto has been a PSU pillar for over three decades," said Lindsay Desrochers, vice president of finance and administration. "He has served this University with great dedication to the educational mission. He has always had a steady hand and great skill in working through difficult problems relating to public safety. Among other accomplishments, he has helped us launch the emergency operations infrastructure for the campus."
Soto began his career as the security manager at the Portland State Bookstore before he joined CPSO, previously called the Campus Safety and Security Office, in 1980. He was named Chief in 2003.
"Mike Soto is a decent and humane person who has contributed to PSU and his community, especially the Native American community, in many, many ways including the mentoring of young people and fostering of children," said Desrochers. "He is a truly wonderful man and we thank him profoundly for his service."
Phillip Zerzan, retired Lieutenant from the Oregon State Police, will serve as interim Chief until a permanent replacement can be found. Zerzan has over 30 years experience in the Oregon State Police including five years of service at Oregon State University.
When asked what next, Soto said "I plan to enjoy a quiet, stress free moment, then get that long awaited 'honey-do' list going. Not sure how much will get done before I think about checking around for part time work here at PSU and I want to be more active in the Native American community and its youth."
