Gabriela Martorell obtained her Ph.D. in Psychology at University of California, Santa Barbara in Developmental and Evolutionary Psychology. She has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in lifespan human development, infant development, cultural issues in psychology, evolutionary psychology, developmental psychopathology and a Capstone practicum in Early Childhood Education. She is committed to teaching, mentoring and advising.
Her research interests are framed by a transactional model of parent child interaction which focuses on how parental cognitions about power and control can affect negative caregiving interactions and the perception of children's behavior. In addition, she is interested in how such characteristics as child temperamental difficulty or disabilities can impact the relationship further. Last, she conducts research on Latino families of children with Down syndrome and focuses on health care access issues and the socializing influences of a family support group.
