Icon Functions

Icon functions

There are many icons you will see repeated throughout your D2L course for functions that are common to all tools. The following are some of the most common and frequently used icons:

When Would I Use This?
edit icon
You will see this icon next to any item in the course that you can edit. This might be a discussion topic, a content file, or a dropbox folder. When you click on this icon, you should see an Edit page that will allow you to make changes to the item you have selected.
edit multiple items icon
Edit multiple items
This icon sometimes appears at the top of lists of items, like in the content area or the gradebook. Checking the box to the left of this icon will select all of the items in the list and allow you to make changes to each item in the list, instead of going to the items one by one. This is especially useful if you want to make changes to topic titles or sort columns of the gradebook into different categories.
delete icon
When you see this icon at the top of a page (like in the Discussions tool), you will first need to click on the icon, then select the items you would like to delete. In other parts of the course, like the Content area, you may see a smaller version of this icon near the bottom of the list. In this case, you will need to first check the boxes next to the items you want to delete, then click the Delete icon.
expand/collapse icon
D2L uses indented lists in many areas of the course shell. in these lists, you will often have the option to expand or collapse the list for easier viewing. These small [+] and [-] signs are actually clickable links that allow you to do this.
reorder icon
Clicking on this icon will allow you to change the order of items in a particular area of the course. First click on the icon, then you will be directed to a screen where you can select the order for the items in the list.
Assess Item
The Assess Item icon should appear in tools where you have specific activities linked to gradebook items, like the discussion board and dropbox. Clicking on this icon will take you to a screen where you will be able to grade your students' participation.
