OTREC is a National University Transportation Center sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Research and Innovative Technology Administration and is a partnership between Portland State University, the University of Oregon, Oregon State University and the Oregon Institute of Technology.
OTREC is a National University Transportation Center
created by Congress in 2005. A partnership between Portland State
University, the University of Oregon, Oregon State University, and the
Oregon Institute of Technology, OTREC is dedicated to stimulating and
conducting collaborative multi-disciplinary research on multi-modal
surface transportation issues; educating a diverse array of current
practitioners and future leaders in the transportation field; and
encouraging implementation of relevant research results. OTREC focuses on activities that support its theme of advanced technologies, integration of land
use and transportation and healthy communities.
With a $16 million grant
from the U.S. Department of Transportation, OTREC sponsors research,
education and technology transfer projects at our partner universities.
OTREC programs relate to the OTREC theme and support national
transportation initiatives and needs. Through collaboration and
partnerships with transportation agencies, industry, and other
universities in the Northwest, OTREC aims to address the transportation
needs of Oregon, the Northwest, and the nation. OTREC is
focused on contributing to USDOT strategic objectives including:
safety, mobility, global connectivity, environmental stewardship,
security and congestion.
The
University Transportation Center (UTC) Program was created to develop
internationally recognized centers of excellence within institutions of
higher learning, and is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Research and Innovative
Technology Administration (RITA). By investing in UTC programs, USDOT’s
goal is to increase the number of talented individuals working in the
field of surface transportation, and meet the 21st century challenge of
safe, efficient, and environmentally sound movement of people and goods
within the U.S. There are 60 UTCs with various themes across the U.S.,
and OTREC is one of 10 designated as a National Center.
