Sydney Meyer, Telecounseling Coordinator

My Name is Sydney Meyer and I have been attending Portland State University since my freshman year in the Fall of 2009. Before starting my college career, I grew up and lived on Hawaii, Maui and like many people who grow up in such a secluded area, I knew from the start that I wanted to leave and explore the various possibilities out there. With the help of a few representatives from Portland State University that met with me one on one while in high school, I was able to learn more about PSU and what it had to offer me. All in all, leaving home and deciding to start my life in Portland Oregon was a challenging decision, but I knew that the challenges and obstacles I faced would be worth it!

How long have you been working for EMSA and what positions have you had or currently have?
I have been with EMSA for the past three years. I first started as a student coordinator in the office of orientation and campus visits and soon after graduating I accepted a position as the telecounseling coordinator.

What is your major/degree (past or current) and why did you choose it?

I graduated PSU with a degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences and a minor in education. Although, through my work in the Orientation and Campus Visits office I decided to pursue a career in higher education, with a focus in student affairs.

What do you like about working at EMSA?
While worked working at EMSA I enjoy the people I have worked with in my past and present position. The relationships I have formed, and the people I have met have helped me throughout my education here at PSU, and I can only hope to have that same influence to someone else.

What is a time you had the most fun on the job?
While working in EMSA I have had many fun times, both in the Orientation and Campus Visits office and telecounseling. What I can remember most vividly would have to be the time I spent as a student worker in the orientation office, working with my fellow coordinators as well as supervisors. The inside jokes we all shared, and the office pranks that took place were probably the funniest and most enjoyable times I can remember.

What is your favorite weekend activity?
During the weekends I tend to enjoy the simple pleasures, catching up one my favorite TV shows or simply watching a movie on Netflix.

Where is your favorite place in Portland and why?
It’s hard to choose just one place in Portland and call it my favorite, but if I had to choose I the NW 23rd district would be top on my list. It’s convenient to get to, and has numerous things to do, from shopping to eating so I never get bored or run out of things to do.

What is the last book that you read?
Right now I’m in the process of reading the Divergent book series. It was recommended to me by a friend, and after finishing the first book I can honestly say I’m not disappointed.

If you could travel to any 3 locations, real or fictional, where would they be?
If I could travel anywhere it would be the Sydney Opera House in Australia, Vatican City in Rome, and London.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years I hope to be working my way up within student affairs. I hope that I can work with new students and share with them my own passion for higher education.
