Sonia Marie Leikam. Holocaust and Genocide Studies Advisory Board Member
Sonia Marie Leikam is a Holocaust Educator who most recently served as Executive Director of the Oregon Holocaust Resource Center. A graduate of Lewis & Clark College (BA) and Portland State University (M.Ed), she also holds a Certificate in Holocaust & Genocide Studies from Georgetown University. An advisory board member of the Holocaust and Genocide Studies Project at the Portland Center for Public Humanities at Portland State University and a member of the Oregon Coalition for Humanity, she works throughout the Pacific Northwest to educate and empower communities looking to respond to human tragedies both past and present. A licensed teacher, she loves directly working with students and giving educators the tools to have meaningful conversations in their classrooms. As the grandchild of a partisan in the French resistance, and a first generation American, she spent her youth traveling between the San Francisco Bay Area and Southern France. Bilingual and multicultural, her passion is educating and making history relevant for young people today. A wife and mother first, she lives in beautiful Portland, Oregon with her husband and 3 boys. Sonia Marie will use her 2014 Carl Wilken Fellowship year to focus on raising awareness about genocide and human rights violations taking place around the world and encourage reflection on our collective past as a catalyst for action and change. The Carl Wilken Fellowship focuses on the effective prevention and end of genocide through the shaping of US policy, community organizing and supporting innovative programming.
