Meet Rahim Abbasi, Master in Real Estate Development (MRED) Student
Meet Rahim Abbasi, Master in Real Estate Development (MRED) Student

Building design. International travel.  The pursuit of knowledge.  That pretty well defines my last ten years. My undergrad degree in civil and environmental engineering led to my current interests in building design, site planning and structural engineering.  International travel opened a broader perspective of the built environment. In 2009 I founded Abbasi Design Works, LLC. Since then I have worked on the design of over 35 projects and now am expanding to ground up development for my own account.

I came to the Master in Real Estate Development program largely fluent in design and engineering and am leaving with a much wider fluency.  I have the program to thank for providing me the broader theoretical and applied framework to understand and fully appreciate the uniqueness inherent in every development project.  The MRED offers a rigorous yet flexible academic setting for obtaining knowledge in real estate finance, deal structure, and urban development theory.  This flexibility has allowed me to continue operating Abbasi Design Works during its critical formative period.  My business itself has benefited immeasurably from the MRED’s networking opportunities with other students, faculty, peers, professional organizations, and mentors active in the local development community.

Additional aspects of the program I have appreciated include the blend of full-time faculty with industry professionals teaching in an adjunct role, the BOMA development workshop that requires students to apply their classroom knowledge to a real world project, and flexibility in elective courses allowing me to tailor my education to fit within my career aspirations through participation in study abroad trips to the Middle East and Europe.

As I near graduation, the MRED has helped to instill confidence as I take this first step into the field of real estate development with hopes to be a future leader.
