Janine Allen, PhD, is a professor in the Educational Leadership and Policy Department and teaches in the Postsecondary, Adult, and Continuing Education (PACE) specialization. She earned her doctorate from the University of Oregon. As a former senior student affairs officer at Portland State University and Western Oregon University, she is interested in student success and preparing student affairs professionals who can meet the challenges to success that confront today's students. Her research interests lie in studying factors that contribute to the success and persistence of undergraduate students, particularly those who have been historically underrepresented in higher education.
Dr. Allen's current research projects include studying academic advising in collaboration with Dr. Cathleen Smith, professor emerita of psychology. They are conducting a multi-institutional study to examine student and faculty attitudes about, and experiences with, academic advising and the implications for student learning persistence. In addition, Dr. Allen is working with Dr. Mary Kinnick, professor emerita of PACE, and Dr. Christine Cress, professor of PACE, to study how social justice principles are enacted in adult educator's lives.
