Meet Professor David Maier

David Maier, Ph.D., Maseeh Professor of Emerging Technologies, Department of Computer Science

David Maier, computer science professor and internationally recognized expert on database systems, has authored books on relational databases, logic programming and object-oriented databases, as well as papers on database theory, object-oriented technology, and scientific databases. In the fall of 2004, he moved to Portland State after 22 years at Oregon Health & Science University's OGI School of Science & Engineering.

"The department is delighted to have Professor Maier on its faculty," said Cynthia Brown, Department of Computer Science professor and chair. "Not only is he a well-known database researcher, he's also a wonderful teacher and mentor for our students."

Soon after arriving at Portland State, David Maier was selected as the first Maseeh Professor of Emerging Technologies. This professorship was established in 2004 to support the Maseeh College's efforts in the field of emerging technologies, one of its top research priorities, through a generous gift by Dr. Fariborz Maseeh's The Massiah Foundation.

"In our quest for excellence, endowed professorships such as the Maseeh Professorship of Emerging Technologies assist us in attracting the top academic talent needed to advance the Maseeh College," said Dean Robert D. Dryden.

Dr. Maier received a Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation in 1984 and was awarded the 1997 SIGMOD (Special Interest Group on Management of Data) Innovations Award for his contributions in objects and databases. He is also an ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) Fellow. Dr. Maier holds a double B.A. in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Oregon (Honors College) and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Princeton University.

In the 2005-2006 academic year, Dr. Maier has been involved in procuring over $1 million in research funding from the National Science Foundation on such projects as:

  • "Adapting Information Using Superimposed Models and Structures," in collaboration with Dr. Lois Delcambre;
  • "Exploiting Live Plus Archive Data for Intelligent Transportation Systems," in collaboration with Dr. Robert Bertini and Dr. Kristin Tufte; and
  • A Small Grant for Exploratory Research (SGER) on forest management, in collaboration with Dr. Judy Cushing of The Evergreen State College, Fred Martin of the Washington Department of Natural Resources, and others.

In addition, Dr. Maier expects to have three of his Ph.D. students defend their dissertations this fall. They are among the students who transferred to PSU after Maier and ten colleagues moved to PSU in 2004.

Dr. Maier's non-academic interests include theater, bicycling, and snorkeling. "My wife, Kaye, and I have been attending plays together since we first became an 'item' back in grad school," relates Maier. "Last year I saw something like 33 performances, and she saw even more. The bicycling came much later in life. I credit Wu-chi Feng and other people in the systems group with getting me back up on a bike a few years ago, after more than 20 years of not riding. The snorkeling grew out of a family trip to Hawaii a few years back to celebrate my folks' 50th anniversary. We discovered someone who makes goggles strong enough for my wife's prescription, and it's given us a shared outdoor activity. Who'd have thought I'd own this much Lycra after I hit 50?"
