Barb Ruben, EdD, works with preservice teachers in the Graduate Teacher Education Program (GTEP), the Secondary Dual Educator Program (SDEP), and the Library Media Program.
Barb Ruben was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. She graduated from Portland Public Schools in 1974 and then attended Brandeis University and University of California Santa Cruz for her undergraduate education in environmental planning. After returning to Oregon, she worked one year with adults in environmental policy and became convinced environmental education needed to start with young people.
Dr. Ruben went back to Lewis and Clark College for an elementary teacher's license and started teaching sixth grade in Portland Public Schools in 1980. In 1985 she received her master's degree and reading endorsement through Portland State University. She has taught every grade from kindergarten through eighth grade. She worked as a math consultant for Centennial School District, a science teacher for Portland Jewish Academy and OMSI, a reading tutor in Beaverton Schools, and volunteered in an 11th grade American History class at Jefferson High School.
In the early 1990s she returned to Lewis and Clark for an education administration license and to supervise student teachers. She returned to teaching for five more years in an elementary classroom before starting her work with preservice teachers in the GTEP program at Portland State in 1999.
Dr. Ruben received her doctorate in educational leadership at PSU in June 2004. Her doctoral work entailed studying whether a teacher education program can influence the development of teachers as change agents. She and her colleagues in general education and special education collaborated to develop a dual licensure program in secondary content area and special education. As part of that program she has been involved in research in preservice general ed/special ed collaboration. She looks forward to continuing her work with preservice and inservice teachers.
