James Berokoff, Mechanical Engineering (2003)
James Berokoff transferred to PSU from Portland Community College. He graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in June 2003. While at PSU, he worked part time for CBG Consulting Engineers.
James says the best thing about PSU is its "diverse and practical culture. PSU classrooms reflect the real world, not a small slice of it."
The real value of the PSU experience is very clear to James. "Initially, I chose PSU because of affordability and its urban location. But, now that I've been here a while, I appreciate the quality of the faculty and the hands-on experience I get every day," he said shortly before graduating.
For James, nothing exemplifies PSU more than the special projects on which he has worked with professors. He blended his love of plants with a class assignment and built a state-of-the-art greenhouse in 2002. And, for his Capstone project, James worked with the Oregon Zoo and a team of PSU students to design a piece of equipment to improve elephant exercise routines.
To prepare for his ongoing professional education, James was a very active member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers, and PSU's chapter of Tau Beta Pi.
