Briar Levit, Print Designer and Professor
Briar Levit, Print Designer and Professor

Briar Levit is a print designer focusing on book and publication design, including a specific interest in the developing realm of tablet books and editions. She studied at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design for her MA in Communication Design and at San Francisco State University for her BA in Graphic Design.

After a number of years as art director for Bitch: Feminist Response to Pop Culture, she remains closely connected to Bitch Media, the nonprofit organization that publishes the magazine. She currently is working to develop a tablet based app/distribution for the publication."

Her freelance design under the name, BriarMade, includes work for clients including, the Museum of Contemporary Craft, Timber Press, Counterpoint Press, Seal Press, and California State Parks, among others.

Briar’s self-initiated work explores the ways in which nature is graphically visualized and communicated. In her books, Inside the Brambles and Portland Companion Walks—the latter of which was funded by a grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Commission (RACC)—she experimented with new concepts in the structure, voice, and design of guide books.

As an assistant professor in the Graphic Design program, Briar aims to help students gain, not just the technical skills needed for a successful career, but the ability to think about each design problem as one with unique concerns. This should ultimately cultivate an approach that avoids clichés and tired trends in favor of clear and befitting solutions that support the message.
