What Arlene has to say...

BEST PART OF JOB:
Interacting with people and being energized when things “work.”

UNIQUE ASPECTS ABOUT WORKING AT TOULAN SCHOOL:
It is probably the school within the University that best represents the concept of an “urban university,” which is what I think makes Portland State University unique.  It is one of the factors that influenced my decision to pursue my education here.

FIVE WORDS TO DESCRIBE APPROACH TO JOB:
Interested – Present – Engaged – Communication - Teamwork

WHAT STUDENTS SHOULD TAKE AWAY FROM TIME AT TOULAN SCHOOL:
I hope that time at the Toulan School gives students an appreciation of the complexity of the world and a sense of the “interconnectedness” of things and how they impact one another.

BEST PART OF INTERACTION WITH STUDENTS:
I enjoy being able to answer questions, help solve problems and whatever else can facilitate and enhance their experience as a student here.  I enjoy sharing knowledge.

ADVICE FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS:
Value your time here and make the most of the opportunity to expand your mind and your horizons with all that is there to learn.

FAVORITE CITY OR URBAN SETTING:
There are many interesting cities and urban settings that provide rich diversity through people, cultures and ideas. One of the things that impressed me about Tokyo, Japan when I have spent time there is how so many people can live in such close quarters and seem to exist in a civil manner.  Also, no matter how small the space, each dwelling incorporates a garden of flowers or other living plants.

FAVORITE NON-URBAN PLACE
Montana – a complete departure from the pulse of urban life that brings one a sense of balance and perspective.

INFLUENTIAL BOOK: Tao Te Ching

WHEN NOT AT WORK, I LIKE TO:
Hike, swim, read, write haiku, garden, watch movies, listen to music, cook and enjoy food with friends, and explore photography.

FAVORITE COLOR: Midnight blue – it reminds me of the wonderful celestial panorama in the night skies of Montana where I was born and where I grew up.

DREAM VACATION: Anyplace near the Pacific Ocean – Maui is favorite destination.  A dream vacation is one that is truly a vacation, one that allows for total relaxation and renewal.
