My name is Alex Bigazzi, and I’m a graduate student in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. I began researching emissions and air quality around transportation facilities in the Intelligent Transportation Systems Lab as an undergraduate here at Portland State University in order to advance transportation research and help us move toward a more sustainable transportation system. I’m particularly interested in the relationships between traffic congestion, motor vehicle emissions, and human exposure to traffic-related air pollution, and my research draws from both behavioral and physical sciences which combined can better inform both systems management and policy.
This year my research has led to several journal publications, including a Best Paper Award for the Transportation Research Forum, as well as numerous conference presentations. I’ve recently been awarded two fellowships, one from the National Science Foundation and another from the U.S. Department of Transportation, which combined will fully fund five years of graduate research.
