Coming from hardworking, blue collar, supportive but poor families, the Yadens both received scholarships during their time at Portland State and remained integral to their future successes. This year two undergraduate students in the College of Urban & Public Affairs will be the first recipients of the Yaden family endowed scholarship; their goal for this endowment is to help students from similar backgrounds. “It makes me really happy to think that someone like me whose father had maybe finished 8th Grade could get a university degree with a little financial help.” Janice says.

The Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys is a collection of books, films, and other resources chosen with a view to familiarizing the American public with Islam and the cultural heritage of Islamic civilizations around the world.

As Program Administrator and Teaching Support Specialist in the Center for Academic Excellence, Patrice provides resources to enhance and support the work of faculty and the academic departments. She supports each of the units in the CAE, and coordinates programs and events, CAE site visits, manages the CAE library, maintains program statistics, participates in grant-writing, edits and designs the CAE annual report. In addition to her CAE responsibilities, Patrice teaches a summer capstone class, served as Co-Chair of PSU’s Commission on the Status of Women, is a Co-Chair of PSU’s Diversity Action Council, and is a certified notary public. After earning her B.S. in Education at PSU in 1988, Patrice served as a Peace Corps volunteer (1988-90) training teachers in Belize, Central America. A single mother of three, she spends her free time volunteering for both Donate Life Northwest and the Oregon Council on Multiracial Affairs. Patrice earned an M.S. in Publishing at PSU in 2008 and a Graduate Certifi cate in Teaching Adult Learners. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi.

The Police Reserve Specialists program involves computer experts, including Portland State faculty, in assisting police investigating high-tech crime. PSU faculty and students help to assess evidence and serve as expert witnesses at trials.

The mission of the Portland Research and Education Network (PREN) is to promote collaboration and the development of innovative network services and advanced applications to further regional leadership in research, education and health care.

AXIS Performance Advisors is a management consulting firm specializing in the implementation of sustainable business practices. This partnership is a joint collaboration between PSU and Axis Performance to offer a professional certificate in implementing sustainability practices.

Students are forming a mini-foundation to research non-profits and their funding needs in Portland. Through a grant from the PGE Foundation, they will disperse $5000 in grant funds to solicited organizations through a competetive process.

The Bel Canto Festival allowed PSU music students to learn through public performances with major international performers and composers throughout the Portland area.

PSU students assist in data collection and evaluation for Project Safe Neighborhoods, a multi-agency task force focusing on the reduction of gun crimes in the tri-county area.

Ethos, Inc. seeks to introduce a whole new generation of youth to the magic of music. PSU Capstone students partnered with Ethos to design and deliver an arts education curriculum that used jazz to enhance student learning outcomes in mathematics and reading.

The ESD Outdoor School is designed to teach field-based science concepts as they relate to natural resources, to extend science instruction beyond the classroom and to implement activities that provide opportunities for participation in cooperative living experiences, performing arts, recreation, and structured events.

Spanish-speaking adults who have had little opportunity to recieve formal education come to the Adult Native Literacy Program for basic literacy classes. PSU students volunteer as tutors for the Native Literacy Project.

Child and Family Studies students meet goals and objectives of practicum experience in early childhood education by serving at the Nike Child Development Center in a variety of capacities.

Metro funds commercial technical assistance projects providing on-site assistance to businesses throughout the region focusing on recovering additional resources from the waste stream, increasing markets for recycled content products, and promoting waste prevention practices.

NAYA works to increase opportunities for healthy activities by promoting family stability, youth camps, support groups, cultural activities, tutoring classes, and special events. PSU students assist in helping the agency grow from a small recreation program staffed by volunteers to a fully sustainable youth community center.

Students worked with Brian Lipinski throughout Spring Term 2003 to design and write a brochure discussing the ecological features and flora and fauna of the Camilla Reserve. The brochure is for the public at large.

NCNM provides an academic experience focusing on natural medicine, both eastern and western, and integrated medical education, research, and patient care. PSU Students research, develop and write grant proposals to assist the NCNM in its pursuit of funding for program support.

PSU students conduct research to understand which brand(s) of cigarettes are the most addictive by measuring the degree of free-base form of nicotine in the smoke particulate matter.

Camp Enterprise provides high school juniors with experiences in leadership, business principles, and dealing with challenges of life & business. The objective of the Camp Enterprise Program is to explore, expose, challenge and awaken interest in the concepts of "business" and "private enterprise".

The Blazers Boys and Girls Club serves as a resource center for children ages 7 to 18. Students involved in this partnership gain a deeper awareness of what in means to live in a diverse community.

El Programa Hispano provides a comprehensive array of social and mental health services to low-income Latinos who speak little or no English and live in the Portland-area. PSU students use Spanish skills to assist recent immigrants with a variety of social services.

Child and Family Studies students meet goals and objectives for community-based practicum, focused on domestic violence intervention with children.

PSU faculty and students have conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the port's solid waste and recycling management systems, providing recommendations for improvement, including establishing the only major airport food waste diversion program in the country.

Portland Parks and Recreation requested input from Kenton area residents regarding ways to improve Kenton Park using urban renewal funds. PSU Capstone students used surveys and public meetings to gather input.

Sisters Of the Road Cafh is a non-profit restaurant open to the public. An estimated 250-300 meals are served daily through SOTR's Hot Meals Program. Meals are given free of charge to all first time visitors to the cafi and to those who are unable to pay and cannot work because of age, ill health or parenting responsibilities.

PSU students serve as mentors to address the needs of Spanish-speaking youth in the juvenile correctional facility.

The Oregon Federal Executive Board's Minority Business Opportunity Committee (MBOC) is a partnership that strives to enhance opportunities for women-owned and minority-owned small businesses to earn contracts on public and private sector projects.

The mission of IRCO is assist refugees, immigrants and multi-ethnic communities to develop self-sufficiency and cultural awareness while affirming and preserving each culture within an ever-changing global environment.

The YWCA's Yolanda House is an emergency shelter and service program for women survivors of domestic or sexual violence and their children. PSU students partner with the Yolanda House to meet goals and objectives for community-based practicum focusing on domestic violence and supportive services for children.

LISTOS serves high-risk Hispanic and other high school students who have left the public school system. Last year, LISTOS educated over 150 young people in order to improve their skills in language, math, social studies and science.

The Youth Employment Institute is a nonprofit organization that provides employment, education and training program for high risk youth. The YEI partners with Portland State to provide field learning experiences. All youth are taught life skills, basic employment readiness training, and receive job search assistance.

The Early Head Start Family Center of Portland is a consortium of local service providers, clients, and other interested parties in the fields of social services, health, and education.

The Institute for Judaic Studies collaborates with PSU to offer lectures and cultural events, including co-sponsorship of visiting scholars and writers and professors, to adults interesting in studying Judaic history and Judaism.

Self-enhancement, Inc. provides program evaluation, research, and demonstration projects designed to improve services and outcomes for African-American children and families, specifically geared to reducing non-relative placements of children and recurrence of maltreatment.

TWC works with local communities, land trusts, watershed councils, and state resource managers to build local stewardship and acquire lands. TWC and PSU's Geography Department have created a website to disseminate information about the state's important wetlands.

The Oregon Geographic Alliance provides professional development for geography teachers regarding course content and pedagogy methods.

The Artists Repertory Theatre and the PSU School of Theatre & Film collaborate to bring Hungarian and American artists together to share cultural experiences.

Students participate in a Senior Capstone course designed to fulfill a request by the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association to create a history of the Chinese culture in Oregon.

Students provide program support for medically-indigent, HIV-positive individuals, such as serving and delivering meals, planning day outtings, etc.

The Archaeological Institute of America works to bring professional archaeologists to PSU and to spread knowledge of archaeology to the Portland community.

Students designed, and implemented a training course on "job readiness" for homeless women who were interested in pursuing employment.

The International SummerStays program links international students attending PSU to American culture and language experiences in the Portland Metropolitan Community.

This Oregon Solutions project involves the stakeholders of the Rockwood Triangle collaborating to create a strategic investment plan for the area.

Student interns conduct research in support of the Fresh Alliance program which seeks to recover perishable food from retailers as it reaches its expiration date.

OUV is a non-profit organization founded on the belief that every person can make a positive difference in their community. OUV invites everyone in a neighborhood to Neighborhood Conversations, where they provide facilitation, food, and necessary accommodations for 2 = hour-long discussions designed to encourage neighbors to share their hopes and ideas with each other.

Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility provides students with the opportunity to perform community service with a non-profit organization focusing on peace and environment issues.

This partnership combines the practical filmmaking resources of the NWFC with PSU's academic expertise. Students can take classes at the NWFC for PSU credit, and vice versa. Students are able to concurrently register for individual classes, pursue a BA or BS in Film and/or a Minor in Film Studies in the School of Theatre & Film at PSU, and pursue a Certificate in Film Studies at NWFC.

Friends of the Children provides field instruction for an advanced Masters in Social Work student in community-based practice. Social work faculty and doctoral students serve on committees and taskforces, providing research and social service expertise.

The Oregon College of Oriental Medicine serves as both the research site for a National Institute of Homeopathy grant and as a research site for students interested in homeopathic medicine.

This partnership connects computer forensic experts at PSU with law enforcement officials at the Hillsboro Police Department to assist with criminal investigations.

PSU students serve as tutors/classroom aides in a bilingual Spanish/English dual immersion program. The partnership provides PSU students with a vehicle for using their language skills in a real-world setting while filling a critical need for Spanish-speaking volunteers.

PSU students involved with counseling and social work collaborate to provide services to at-risk students within the David Douglas School District.

The goal of this project is to develop a PSU-housed collection of Metro's Global Imaging System data and planning documents for faculty and student research.

The World Affairs Council facilitates information exchange with international visitors - scholars, historians, archeologists - on historic preservation, community involvement, civic pride, fundraising, operations and management.

Criminal Justice students proivde evaluation services for the Department of Community Justice's Cultural Competency Plan.

Students in Applied Linguistics teach English as a Second Language (ESL) evening classes for adult refugees and immigrants in local public schools. PSU students get teaching practice under supervision; adult ESL students get free classes in survival English.

PSU students explore literary themes with students using creative media such as art, music, sign language, and poetry.

This partnership allows PSU to host some of the finest chamber ensembles in the world on campus and provides master classes with these ensembles for PSU students.

Deteriorating physical features of urban environments can negatively impact public health. Students in Urban Planning and Public Health conduct research to determine relationships between poor living conditions and physcial/mental health.

Wolftree and PSU Capstone students attempt to improve science literacy in the schools, with a focus on schools in low-income communities and schools with large populations of at-risk students.

Students in the Strategic Management for Non-profits University Studies Capstone course assist with the sustainability and growth needs of p:ear, an organization which uses education, art, and recreation to address homeless youth needs.

This partnership involves Masters in Business Administration students attempting analyzing new technologies under development at Providence Hospital. The outcomes are student reports on the main applications of this new technology.

KBOO allows students to gain firsthand experience putting music and activism together in the Portland area by exploring alternative routes to political activism and community involvement.

RAINS is a non-profit, private/public partnership formed to accelerate the development and deployment of technology for homeland security. PSU students perform research and development on a network infrastructure designed to allow first-responders to communicate securely about emergency situations.

The Challenge Program is an opportunity for high school seniors to take college courses and earn college credit while still in high school.

Young Audiences (YA)works to bring artists into the Graduate Teacher Education Program at PSU and emphasizes the use of the arts as a tool for reflective thought and other teaching practices.

Students survey and obtain data in three locations with different degrees of urbanization in Forest Park. All of the information collected will help in understanding the relationship between ivy and native plants with regard to human impacts/urbanization.

The Northwest Access Exchange, a regional Internet exchange, connects service providers, businesses, and communities throughout the Northwest to improve access, save money and enable the region to attain critical mass on the Internet.
