Portland , OR – On October 1st , 2009, Student Activities and Leadership Programs (SALP) and Campus Recreation at Portland State University (PSU) will host the 19th Annual Party in the Park at the PSU Park Blocks, 1825 SW Broadway, from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Founded in 1990, Party in the Park is the biggest recruitment event on campus and is one of the most celebrated traditions at PSU that draws thousands of students to the Park Blocks outside of the Smith Memorial Student Union to celebrate the beginning of the school year and feature hundreds of student organizations and student activities. The objective of Party in the Park is to promote student leadership and involvement in student activities and organizations.
Like previous events, the 2009 Party in the Park will offer free food, live entertainment, information, and exciting opportunities for students. Party in the Park presents a perfect opportunity for new and returning students to meet thousands of other PSU students and learn about opportunities to get involved within the PSU campus community. Upon completing passports that will require students to receive stamps from representatives from at least 4-5 different student groups, Party in the Park attendees will be treated with free Lebanese lunches, beverages, and fresh baked cookies. While hundreds of student organizations, campus departments, and vendors will be on site, various celebrity hosts/servers or campus administrators and well-known PSU staff/faculty members will be available to assist with the event.
The event will feature performances from local bands such as New Century School Book, The Rainy States, and The Shivas. This year’s Party in the Park will coincidentally launch the “Go Green Fridays” school spirit campaign organized by the PSU University Communications. The campaign promotes school spirit, pride and tradition by encouraging students and staff to wear PSU gear on Fridays. The campaign will be giving away free T-Shirts and launching this term’s “Go Green” contest.
This year’s festivities hope to create buzz about next year’s event as it reaches its 20th year of production. SALP Director Aimee Shattuck said, “SALP is honored to have been planning Party in the Park, together with students and departments across campus, for the last nineteen years.” She anticipates the planning for the 20th annual Party in the Park to begin as soon as this year’s event is over. She adds, “Next year’s event will give Portland State the chance to celebrate one of the largest and longest-lasting student-engagement events on campus.”
