Food System Sustainability Forum, April 25

What: Portland State University's Institute of Portland Metropolitan Studies   is holding a Food System Sustainability Forum on the topic of "Planting Prosperity and Harvesting Health: Trade-Offs and Sustainability in Our Regional Food System." The Institute, with support from the Kaiser Community Health Initiative, has prepared a "State of the Regional Food System" report that investigates the connections and trade-offs in the economic and physical health of our food system.

This forum is an effort to understand how we can use past, current and future data to guide our decisions about how to sustain our regional food system -- the production chain in Oregon and Washington that connects to consumers in the six-county Portland metropolitan region. The forum will include highlights from the food system report, panel and small group discussions and a reflection panel. Dr. Gail Feenstra, the food systems coordinator at the University of California's Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program, is the keynote speaker.

When: April 25, 2008. Breakfast begins at 8 a.m. Program begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m.

Background: The Portland State Institute of Portland Metropolitan studies was created to better connect the university to issues of concern to communities in the six-county Portland-Vancouver metropolitan area, and to bring new attention to key issues of metropolitan significance. Acting as both a broker and a catalyst, the Institute has been serving the region since 1992.
