Portland State University is honoring four outstanding Portland State alumni, faculty and friends (listed below) for success in their fields and for their dedication and support of both the University and the Portland community at the 18th annual PSU Salutes. The Alumni Association will also recognize President Daniel O. Bernstine for his decade of service to the University. The ceremony will be held Thursday, May 10, 2007, from 5:30–7:30 p.m. in the Smith Memorial Student Union Ballroom (1825 SW Broadway). Tickets are $25 and available by calling 503-725-4948.
Outstanding Alumni Awards
Honorable Mary Mertens James, J.D., B.S., ’78 Business Administration
An Outstanding Alumnus Award will be given to the Honorable Mary James for her distinguished law career and commitment to the University and community. Judge James has been a Marion County Circuit Court Judge since 2003. She also volunteers her time to organizations including Oregon Women Lawyers, American Inns of Court and the Oregon State Bar, along with several nonprofits.
An Outstanding Alumnus Award will be given to Jean Immel Thorne for her distinguished career achievements and dedication to public service. Thorne currently serves as the Administrator for the Oregon Public Employees’ Benefit Board (PEBB), the first woman to hold the position, and has held other positions in Oregon state government focused primarily on health and human services since 1976.
Outstanding Friend of Athletics
The Outstanding Friend of Athletics Award will be given to Donna Koch for her tireless volunteer service and commitment to the success of PSU student athletes. A frequent athletic event attendee, Koch generously volunteers for PSU athletic programs. She has helped raise money for PSU athletics by managing the silent auction in the Ultimate Tailgate fundraisers, and also helping with the annual Night of Wine and Roses. Koch has also chaired the PSU Viking Golf Tournaments that raises money for women’s golf.
Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award
Robert Bertini, Ph.D., P.E.
The Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award will be given to Robert Bertini in honor of his excellence in teaching and research and dedication to the University and community. Bertini has been a faculty member since 2000. He is an associate professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science and College of Urban and Public Affairs. Bertini also directs the Oregon Transportation Research and Education Consortium.
