Portland State University’s Ooligan Press has issued a new edition of Robin Cody’s seminal coming-of-age story, Ricochet River ($14.95, 272 pages, paperback).

Set in a fictional logging town in the Pacific Northwest, Ricochet River is the story of three teenagers ready to break out of their small-town lives: Wade, the local sports hero; Jesse, his friend—the American Indian kid and mythical athlete who applies his own rules to sports and life; and Lorna, Wade's sweetheart, who knows there's no hope in Calamus, Ore., for a bright, independent girl.

Ricochet River cover A perennial favorite for high school reading lists, this new edition features a text revised by the author that addresses issues of profanity and sexual content that have made the book a lightning rod for criticism in high school classrooms throughout the region since its original publication in 1992. Students in Portland State University’s book publishing program worked with Portland author Robin Cody to identify problematic passages and to redesign the cover to better reflect the book’s content.

Run by students enrolled in the publishing concentration of the master’s program in Writing, Ooligan Press is unique as a teaching press fully integrated in the academic curriculum. Students acquire, edit, design, and market real books that enjoy national distribution. Ricochet River is the second book released by Ooligan. PSU Department of English faculty Tony Wolk's Abraham Lincoln, A Novel Life was published in February 2004. Ricochet River was one of 100 books selected by the Oregon Cultural Heritage Commission as exemplifying Oregon’s rich literary heritage from the years 1800 to 2000, and has also garnered rave reviews from Publishers Weekly, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and English Journal. Robin Cody is the author of numerous magazine and journal articles, and of Voyage of a Summer Sun, a chronicle of his solo canoe trip down the Columbia River, which won the 1995 Oregon Book Award.
