Transportation

How we get to and from campus plays a significant role in our environmental impact.  According to the US EPA,  transportation sources contributed approximately 27 percent of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in 2008, and represent the fastest growing source of emissions. By choosing alternative transportation modes such as biking, walking, public transit, or carpooling to get to campus we can help to minimize problems such as greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, and urban congestion.

What PSU is doing to lessen our impact:

  • Portland Streetcar, Max light rail, and 15 bus lines converge to connect PSU’s campus to the entire metro region, making PSU the busiest transit hub in all of Portland.

  • Over 40% of students, and over 45% of staff and faculty use transit to get to PSU. (See Transportation Planning reports for more info.)

  • Partially subsidized transit passes are available for the campus community.

  • Student drive-alone trips have decreased 56% since 1997, and since 1996, employee drive-alone trips have decreased 43%. (See PSU's Transportation Planning site for more info.)

  • Electric Avenue” allows electric vehicle drivers to park and plug in to one of multiple charging stations installed along SW Montgomery Street, between Broadway and Sixth Avenue.

  • PSU Bike Hub is an on-campus bike shop specifically designed for students, faculty and staff.

  • Bicycle Transportation Plan outlines many of the programs and facilities PSU is pursuing in order to promote bicycle ridership by more people coming and going from campus.

  • Secure, covered bike parking is available at 4 locations across campus, with a total of 232 spaces. (Permits distributed by the Transportation & Parking department.)

  • VikeBikes program offers low cost rental of refurbished bikes by the academic term.

  • The Broadway Cycle Track installed by the City of Portland’sBureau of Transportation on SW Broadway between SW Clay and SW Jackson streets is an innovative bicycle facility where the bicycle lane is separated from motor vehicle traffic lanes by an area including a lane of parked cars.

  • Bike to PSU Challenge takes place every May, and numerous University departments also participate in the BicycleTransportation Alliance’s Bike Commute Challenge each September.

  • Campus fleet includes 10 plug-in hybrid vehicles, and 23 all-electric vehicles.

  • PSU faculty and staff can join Zipcar for free, receive reduced rates for personal driving on weekdays, and use one of the 20 Zipcars on campus. Students can join Zipcar for a reduced rate.

PSU students and employees can join Getaround--a car sharing community which helps people rent each other's cars--for free. More info: www.getaround.com/@psu
