For the second year in a row, U.S. News & World Report has named Portland State University
a top 10 “up-and-coming” national university in its Best Colleges rankings, released online Sept. 10.

The up-and-coming list recognizes universities for making “the most promising and innovative changes in the areas of academics, faculty, student life, campus, or facilities” based on a survey of college administrators. Other up-and-coming universities include the University of Southern California and Arizona State University.

"People are taking notice of Portland State because of our growing academic and research excellence," said Wim Wiewel, PSU president. “We are working hard to create rigorous and relevant educational experiences that connect students to the real world.”

This year’s rankings also recognize PSU in two “Academic Programs to Look For” categories for its service learning and Senior Capstone programs. PSU’s Senior Capstone courses are community-based learning classes designed by a faculty member to provide an opportunity for students to apply what they have learned to a real challenge in the community. The courses are part of PSU’s campus-wide focus on engagement through service projects, hands-on learning and community-university partnerships.

U.S. News ranks colleges annually from data on up to 16 indicators of academic excellence, including surveys of administrators at peer institutions, student retention and graduation rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving.
