Tere Mathern practices by herself at Conduit Dance studio in Portland. (Faith Cathcart)
Tere Mathern long has been a central figure in Portland's small but fertile contemporary dance scene, as a performer, choreographer and stalwart director of Conduit, the scene's essential incubator of a rehearsal/performance space.
While she's been pursuing her art here, Sanda Mathern-Smith -- her twin and a fellow Portland State University graduate -- has been making her mark in the Midwest.
The chair of the dance department at Ohio's Denison University, Mathern-Smith will make a rare appearance back in her home state with Merge Dance Project, performing "Swimming in Green," a piece for three dancers plus video projection and live music.
8 p.m. Friday-Saturday, Conduit, 918 S.W. Yamhill St., Suite 401; $15, brownpapertickets.com/event/356572
