About New Student Orientation

What is New Student Orientation? At New Student Orientation new students learn about graduation requirements and community expectations. Students will connect with faculty, staff, and other students, student services and resources. Students will also take a photo for their PSU ID card, receive academic advising, take care of any administrative issues and register for classes. New Student Orientation is a half-day program for transfer students and a full-day program for incoming freshmen.

Do I need to attend New Student Orientation? If you are a domestic or international undergraduate students, YES - you must attend New Student Orientation. All new domestic and international undergraduate students to PSU will have to complete the entire Orientation program before gaining course registration access for their first term on campus. It is mandatory.

If you are a non-degree, post-bac, graduate, or distance-learner student, NO - you do not need to attend New Student Orientation. In some cases, there may be orientation requirements specific to your program.

Why do I need to attend New Student Orientation? Students are required to attend New Student Orientation to be completely aware of campus policies and processes, as well as educational requirements. We want all new students to put their best foot forward at PSU - this is why Orientation is mandatory.

What happens during New Student Orientation? The goals of Orientation are for you to connect to campus, learn about graduation requirements, access academic advising, and register for courses. In addition, you will be able to go on a campus tour, interact with campus departments, and conduct any necessary University business.

How do I sign up for New Student Orientation? From our Orientation homepage, select your orientation term. Step-by-step instructions will be provided. For students starting in the fall term, you also must submit your Intent To Enroll prior to signing up for an orientation session.

What if I already attended PSU's New Student Orientation previously? If you previously attended an Orientation within the last two years as an incoming student, but delayed your start term to a later date, you are not required to attend another Orientation session. You will still need course registration access for your first term on campus, so please contact us at orientation@pdx.edu so accommodations can be arranged.

If you have attended an Orientation outside the two year timeframe, you will need to attend another orientation. Please contact us at orientation@pdx.edu so we can sign you up for a new orientation session.

Signing up for New Student Orientation

Intent To Enroll - what is it? For students starting at PSU in the fall term, submitting your Intent To Enroll is your first step in confirming your decision to enroll at Portland State. More details can be found on the Undergraduate Intent To Enroll page. The Intent To Enroll is typically processed within 24 hours, at which point you will be able to sign up for an orientation session. For students starting in winter, spring, or summer terms, there is no Intent To Enroll as part of the enrollment process.

Still experiencing technical difficulties? Please contact us at orientation@pdx.edu

Fees and Refunds

Are there any fees associated with New Student Orientation? Students are assessed a matriculation fee as part of their first term tuition; a portion of this fee covers the cost of their participation in New Student Orientation. In some cases, there are additional fees:

  • Guests who attend a fall term Freshmen New Student Orientation are asked to pay a fee of $20. This fee helps to cover the cost of breakfast, lunch, program materials, the closing reception, staffing and facilities.
  • Students and guests who attend a fall out-of-state New Student Orientation session are asked to pay a fee for each student and guest in attendance. This fee helps to cover the cost of lunch, program materials, and travel and venue fees associated with hosting New Student Orientation off-campus.
  • All of these fees are paid during the orientation sign-up process. Visa and Mastercard are accepted.

What if I forgot to pay my fees for New Student Orientation? If you forgot to pay your guests' attendance fee at Freshmen Orientation or your fee for attending an out-of-state session, please contact us at orientation@pdx.edu

Can I get a refund if I cancel my guest registration for New Student Orientation? For the majority of orientation sessions, the matriculation fee (that students pay as part of their tuition for their first term) covers the cost of participating in orientation programming. Some programs require additional fees to cover the cost of materials, staffing, space and food. Please note that if you are submitting a program fee within (5) business days of the program, you are not eligible for a refund.

If you have paid to attend an orientation session, you are eligible for a full refund if you e-mail the orientation office prior to (5) business days before your scheduled session. In your e-mail to orientation@pdx.edu, be sure to include the student's name and ID number, the names of the individuals that are cancelling, mailing address, and the reason for the cancellation.

Properly requested and approved refunds will be processed within 10 business days and the purchase amount will be refunded to your original method of payment, such as the credit card used for the order. If the refund applied to your credit card, your credit card company will have its own processing time to post the refund to your account - this processing time varies depending on the company.
