Orientation: Advising and Registration day is your first step to becoming a member of the Portland State University community and a pivotal step in preparing you for fall term. Academic requirements are different at each university and we want to be sure that you are familiar with our academic expectations and prepared to join the academic community. We also want you to learn how to access services available to Portland State University students.
If you have any additional questions about Orientation, please feel free to contact us.
Students will learn in-depth information about their academic requirements during Orientation: Advising and Registration and register for fall term classes. It is essential that you connect with an adviser through an Advising and Registration session to be sure that the courses you plan to take align with your academic, career, and personal goals. Students who do not attend an Advising and Registration session may not register for fall courses until September 14.
Important note: academic advisers from each department may not available at every session. If an adviser from your department is available for a particular session, it will be displayed when you access our online reservation system to reserve your date. On days when an adviser from your department is not available you may meet with one of our University academic advisers. Students who have yet to declare a major may sign-up for any available session displayed through the online reservation system.

Prior to attending an Advising and Registration day, it is important that you review our pre-arrival information page. This will provide you with an overview of academic requirements and campus services, much of which you should be familiar prior to attending your session. The more familiar that you are with academic requirements, student services, and the registration process, the more you will gain from your on campus program experience. Think about this day like you would any class, if you have done the reading beforehand you will connect to the material and gain more from the experience.
All program-related costs for students are paid through the student matriculation fee. This fee is included in your fall bill for tuition and fees which will be mailed in mid-September and be due on October 10, 2009. Guests who attend an Orientation:Advising and Registration day will be assessed a $20 participation fee.
While we fully encourage guests to participate in support of their new PSU student, there is a $20 fee for each guest. This fee covers all program-related costs, including: morning refreshments, lunch, a PSU Family Calendar, and a family handbook. During each First-Year session we offer a separate Family program track. The goal of this program is to acquaint you with the resources and services available to PSU students and to explore the changes and adjustments that students and families will experience during the college transition process.
If you provided PSU with college transcripts reflecting the completion of prior coursework, it is important that you bring a copy of your Transfer Evaluation Report with you to Advising and Registration. You should have received this report with your letter of admission to PSU. If you do not have your report, please contact us at least 48 hours in advance of your confirmed session to request a copy.
While all students are expected to attend an Orientation: Advising and Registration session, it may not be feasible for you to attend a mid-summer session prior to your arrival in Portland in mid to late September. If you are unable to attend a session prior to September, please be sure to call our office to learn of your registration options and to sign-up for our session designed specifically for students travelling from afar on Monday, September 21.
