Online Class Support
Desire2Learn (D2L) is Portland State University's online learning management system (LMS). This page provides resource for students using D2L at Portland State. For faculty help, visit our instructor knowledge base.
You can access D2L using your personal computer or lab computers on the PSU campus. To check whether your personal computer meets the minimum technical specifications required to access D2L, visit Minimum Specifications for Online Learning.
Once you have determined that your computer meets the minimum specifications, you can access D2L by following these steps:
- Go to d2l.pdx.edu in your internet browser.
- Sign in with your Odin account.
- If you don't remember your password, go to Resetting Your Odin Password for instructions on how to reset it.
Your D2L Homepage is the first page you see after signing into D2L. On this page you will find a list of all the courses you are registered for. Please note that not all Portland State courses use online resources or D2L. If you are not sure whether your courses use D2L or not, please contact your instructor.
Like the Course Home page, this page contains a News section. This News section is controlled by the D2L Support Staff and is used for system announcements.
Course Homepage is the entry page for your specific course. It is the first page that you see when you enter the course. This page contains the News tool, Events widget, and Library Resources widget.
The Content tool is where course materials can be found. Content material can range from basic text to multimedia files.
The Discussions tool can be used for online discussions between you and other students and/or your instructor.
The Dropbox tool is an electronic storage space for documents you will be submitting to your instructor. Submissions are date and time stamped.
The Quizzes tool allows you to create a variety of assessments for your students. While labeled "Quizzes", this tool can be used for exams, surveys, and/or homework assignments.
The Groups tool allows you to create a group to organize your classmates for small-group activities or discussions.
The Grades tool allows you to view your grade for the course.
D2L creates D2L email accounts for all users. This account is different from an @pdx.edu email account because it is only for communication within D2L and uses the domain @d2l.pdx.edu instead.
Instructors of large classes may be interested in using their D2L email account so that the large volume of mail generated by a large class does not swamp their @pdx.edu account. Other instructors may ask you not to use D2L Mail at all and contact them via their @pdx.edu account.
Collaborate is a virtual classroom and conferencing software. Instructors may use this to deliver lectures or set up group collaboration sessions.
If you were unable to resolve your question by viewing these tutorials, contact the Helpdesk. The Helpdesk can assist you in using basic D2L functions such as logging in. For more advanced issues, you can submit an E-Learning Support Form.
