Minimum Specifications for Online Learning

Students who intend to take classes using Desire2Learn (D2L) should ensure that their computing devices meet minimum technical specifications required for access. If your device has specifications lower than those listed below, the Office of Information Technology recommends using a lab computer to access D2L. You can find a list of general access labs and hours on the Labs page.

Operating Systems

Desktop Computers

  • Windows
    • Dual-core 2.33GHz or faster x86-compatible processor, or Intel® Atom™ 1.6GHz or faster processor for netbooks
    • Microsoft Windows Vista® (32 bit), Windows 7 (32 bit and 64 bit), or Windows 8 (32 bit and 64 bit)
    • At least 2GB of RAM; 128MB of graphics memory
  • Mac OS
    • Intel Core™ Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz or faster processor
    • Mac OS X v10.6, v10.7, v10.8, or v10.9
    • 2GB of RAM; 128MB of graphics memory
  • Linux
    • Dual-core 2.33GHz or faster x86-compatible processor, or Intel Atom 1.6GHz or faster processor for netbooks
    • Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® (RHEL) 5.6 or later (32 bit and 64 bit), openSUSE® 11.3 or later (32 bit and 64 bit), or Ubuntu 10.04 or later (32 bit and 64 bit)
    • 2GB of RAM; 128MB of graphics memory

Mobile Devices

It is not recommended that you use a mobile device as your sole technology interface for online courses, but they can be utilized as a supplemental technology.

    • Gingerbread and up (Android 2.3+)
  • iPhone or iPad:
    • iOS 5.0+
