(Portland, Ore.) February 4, 2011 – Condoleezza Rice, secretary of state and national security advisor under President George W. Bush, will be the featured speaker at the 12th annual Portland State University Simon Benson Awards Dinner on Oct. 19.

Rice served as national security advisor from January 2001 to 2005, and secretary of state from 2005 to the end of President Bush’s second term in 2009. She currently holds three positions at Stanford University: professor of political economy in the graduate school of business, Thomas and Barbara Stephenson senior fellow on public policy at the Hoover Institution, and professor of political science. She is the author of several books, most recently Extraordinary, Ordinary People: A Memoir of Family (October 2010), which shares how her upbringing in segregated Birmingham, Ala. -- along with her strong family and parents—helped to shape the course of her life.

The co-chairs of the 2011 Simon Benson Awards dinner are Oregon business leaders Tom Fink, a member of the PSU Foundation board, and Rick Hawkins, past chair of the PSU Foundation Board.

Named after one of Oregon’s first philanthropists, the Simon Benson Award was created by Portland State University in 1999 to honor the region’s contemporary pioneers in philanthropy. Recipients are community leaders who have generously given time and resources to improve the lives of generations of Oregonians. A key objective of the event is to highlight the impact and raise the profile of philanthropy throughout Oregon. In 2010, the Simon Benson Awards Dinner raised more than $500,000, supporting students, faculty, and campus programs.
