How are decisions made about what training and education documentation is accepted?
Documentation submitted to ORO must meet the requirements outlined in the Oregon Registry Training and Education Criteria which can be found at www.pdx.edu/occd under Forms and Resources.

Why was my training “not accepted for Oregon Registry use?”
Most likely, the training document didn’t include the required information as specified in the Oregon Registry Training and Education Criteria.

Do I have to send this Statement to my Licensing Specialist or to OCCD as part of my Step Application?
No.  Both the Child Care Division and the OCCD have access to your Oregon Registry Professional Development Statement.

What can my Oregon Registry Professional Development Statement tell me about meeting my training and education requirements for Child Care Division Licensing?
There are three ways to check your training and education hour requirements for CCD licensing.

  • Check your Facility’s Staff Qualification and Training Log listing the total number of training and education hours, which is mailed to every Child Care Division Licensed Facility 120 days prior licensing renewal.
  • Call your Licensing Specialist for the total hours reported to ORO for you or your facility.
  • Compare the hours documented on your Oregon Registry Online Professional Development Statement with Child Care Division licensing requirements.  Be sure to count only the hours within your licensing period.

How do the Core Knowledge Categories relate to the Child Care Division’s “Child Development” and “Other” Categories for Licensing?
The Child Care Division lists the following core knowledge categories as accepted for the child development and early childhood education requirement: Diversity (D), Family and Community Systems (FCS), Human Growth and Development (HGD), Health Safety and Nutrition (HSN), Learning Environments and Curriculum (LEC), Observation and Assessment (OA), Special Needs (SN), and Understanding and Guiding Behavior (UGB).  The “Other” Category includes the Core Body of Knowledge Categories Personal and Professional Leadership Development and Program Management.

What is the Core Body of Knowledge?
The Core Body of Knowledge is the basis for the training and education essential for on-going professional development in the childhood care and education profession. The Core Body of Knowledge also provides a foundation for the programs in Oregon’s Professional Development System.  It is a set of expectations that describes what Oregon’s Childhood Care and Education profession of early childhood educators and afterschool care providers (including those working with children with disabilities and English learners) should know and be able to do.

What is the Oregon Registry?
The Oregon Registry: Pathways for Professional Recognition in Childhood Care and Education is a statewide program that records and recognizes the professional development growth and achievement of people who work with and for children and families. Participation in the Oregon Registry is increasingly seen as an important tool for a professional development.

What are the Oregon Registry Steps?
The Oregon Registry Steps are the sequence from Step 1 through Step 12 in the Oregon Registry.  Each step represents increased training and education in the field.

The Oregon Registry recognizes three pathways for professional development:

  • A degree or certificate pathway
  • A college course credit or
  • A community-based training pathway

How do I join the Oregon Registry Step Program?
All individuals who are enrolled in Oregon Registry Online (ORO) will receive a Step 1 or 2 when they meet the requirements.

If you are interested in Steps 3-12, an application must be submitted for evaluation and review of your training and education. Please visit our website at www.pdx.edu/occd for more information.

What if I need help to apply for an Oregon Registry Step?
Contact your local Child Care Resource and Referral to help you with your application and to plan for your professional development at http://www.oregonchildcare.org/

What is the benefit of an Oregon Registry Step?
An Oregon Registry Step

  • Provides a structured way for people to enter into and to advance within the field.
  • Provides a basis for status, benefits, and incentives for professionals in the field.
  • Promotes quality of care through increased learning in the Core Knowledge Categories.

How is the Oregon Registry Professional Development Statement different from my previous Oregon Registry Step Training and Education Summary?
The Oregon Registry Professional Development Statement replaces the previous Oregon Registry Step Training and Education Summary.  It includes new information about your Safety Set, training and education that is “in review” and why training and education may not have been accepted for Oregon Registry/Oregon Registry Online system use.

Why did this Statement come from Portland State University (PSU)?
The Oregon Center for Career Development in Childhood Care and Education (OCCD) is located at Portland State University (PSU).  OCCD has a contract with the Child Care Division to process and verify training documentation for Child Care Division Licensing and professional development purposes.
