Meet Dan Zalkow
After seven years of being the go-to person for campus parking issues, Dan Zalkow is now able to put his planning and community relations skills to broader use. As the Associate Director for Planning, Transportation and Parking for Housing and Transportation Services, he spends much of his time planning the future of university housing, parking and alternative transportation options. Dan is known for transforming Transportation and Parking Services from a department focused mostly on parking enforcement to one focused on promoting transportation options and offering flexible parking options. During his tenure as the department manager, he and his staff opened a bike shop, created the FlexPass for students, introduced a Flexcar program for faculty and staff and exchanged over 100 parking meters for 8 paystations. According to Dan, who came to PSU after managing an upscale Italian restaurant in Georgia, “Coming from the South, good hospitality is second nature. The excellent service that you come to expect at a nice restaurant is the same level of service that you should expect from a PSU department.” He serves on between five and ten committees at any one time working with individuals, businesses, developers and public agencies from across the region on land use and transportation issues to help make Portland a more livable city. Dan is working on his Ph.D. in urban studies at PSU, has a graduate certificate in real estate development and a master’s degree in urban and regional planning from PSU and a bachelor’s degree in psychology and statistics from the University of Georgia.
