Four free lectures—all from different campus programs—as well as an inaugural Campus Sustainability Celebration are scheduled through June 6. The first talk, "Moving Forward: An Inclusive Agenda for Sustainability," is May 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Smith Union Ballroom, room 355.
"Moving Forward" features Maya Wiley, founder and director of the Center for Social Inclusion, a research and advocacy organization that works to build a fair and just society. Following Wiley's presentation, a panel of community leaders will share their perspectives on moving the equity agenda forward in our region. On May 30, two lectures by PSU faculty members are scheduled beginning with "Portland Area Ecosystems: Progressive Management, but We're Still Losing Ground" by Alan Yeakley at 10 a.m. in 238 Smith Union. At 1 p.m. in 294 Smith Union, Vivek Shandas will present "Making Sustainability Research Work: Challenges and Pitfalls for Conducting Transdisciplinary Science."
The sustainability theme continues June 4 with the first Campus Sustainability Celebration at 11 a.m. in 238 Smith Union. The celebration begins with a Capstone presentation of PSU's recent carbon emissions audit. At 11:45 a.m., accomplishments in campus sustainability for 2007-08 will be celebrated. This academic year's Social Sustainability Colloquium series ends Friday, June 6, at 1 p.m. in 238 Smith Union with "Sustainability Perspectives of Salmon Nation Indigenous Leaders" given by Ph.D. candidate David Hall.
