New Faculty Orientation

The Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) hosts an annual fall orientation program for new faculty (holding academic rank at .50 FTE and above). The program provides opportunities for new faculty to learn about academic priorities, receive information about campus resources and meet their new colleagues. New faculty with appointments effective July, August and September of the new academic year automatically receive fall orientation invitations from OAA in August and September. (Other faculty joining Portland State earlier in the year may contact OAA if they wish to attend the orientation.)

The Office of Human Resources New Employee Briefing is offered throughout the year as appointments are made. The program includes information you'll need right away as a new employee at PSU. The program includes information to help you select and enroll in your benefits plans (this does not occur automatically), information about payroll, holidays, vacation, sick time, medical leaves, training about critical campus policies and a brief history about the origins of PSU.

Faculty should plan to attend both the HR New Employee Briefings and the Fall New Faculty Orientation program. If you recently have been hired and have not received an invitation to attend a briefing, please contact Human Resources at 725-4926 or email Mercy Luebke.

In addition to participating in the briefing and orientation programs, we encourage new faculty to create informal networks with their colleagues, ask questions, especially at the departmental level, and review the faculty handbook, the ABC's of PSU (available on-line only), to learn of many campus resources. Faculty should also note the resources available through the Center for Academic Excellence. Please check the Center's homepage for professional development offerings.

We look forward to meeting each of PSU's new faculty members. Please drop in at our office in 349 Cramer Hall to say "hello."
